Herzog vs. Niemeyer

Way back in 1959 the Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer promoted the contemporary art in Milan, Italy, on the project for Arnold Mondadori, one of the two largest publishers in Italy. Finally, in 1975 was opened a new head office building of the publishing company Mondadori, which today present the memory of this great architect, who recently passed away in his 105-years old. Oscar Niemeyer was one of the first great architects of the 20th century who used ferroconcrete.

One of the true formulations of town planning could be depicted by the formula: a single architecture / time. A little explanation: time – in some period of time, a city is born by buildings built side by side. If this process goes awry, as it is unfortunately the case in Serbia, the obtained result at the end is called antiurbanism and not urbanism, in which urban matrix does not occur but disappear. Architecture, subordinate to man, has always served to provide, contribute, create, preserve, define, assist, facilitate and amaze. It has always in some way essentially been infrastructure, a back-up system, utilized by man. However, the power it entails fulfilling various desires overpowers the man – thus giving rise to new questions. It becomes a powerful factor which further affects people’s needs. Architecture creates architecture. Today, reexamining function of architecture brings us back to man and his basic needs-such as is the need for place.
