This competition was a 48hours architecture marathon, where we were supposed to design a new concept of space for funeral ceremony for all religions. The shape raises from the ground to define the street in an attempt to control the permanent link between the introspective forested area and the existing graveyard space annex. Thus a new block is given to the city with a space for reflection, providing an environment not exposed directly to the public.
Formally the school was defined as a longitudinal volume. The longitudinal facades are surfaces mainly sealed, only punctuated by the repetition of the same vertical opening in an apparently randomness, which at a deeper look demonstrates a careful composition instead.
How would you feel if you were to receive a telephone call saying you had been awarded the Pritzker Prize? It happened to architect Souto de Moura while he was working in his studio in a small Portuguese town. He was surprised and he did not believe it at first. When it was confirmed he stated that he regards this award as a great personal success and that this is also a recognition for Portugal, where all his works are.
