Svetski Festival Arhitekture / World Architecture Festival

Delegates at World Architecture Festival (WAF) in Barcelona have been treated to a vision of the next generation of building design, as the category winners in the WAF Future Project of the Year Awards were unveiled during the Festival.

This was the third WAF, and, the second year that the awards programme has included future projects, celebrating a number of projects that are still on the drawing board. With a strong focus on creativity, they provide an exciting glimpse into the built environment of tomorrow.
The Arc, in Palestinian Occupied Territory, designed by Suisman Urban Design, USA has won the ‘World’s Best Future Project’ award at the prestigious World Architecture Festival Awards (WAF Awards) 2010.
The masterplan, which boldy seeks to unite a sensitive region, has been showcased amongst a wide range of future projects, all competing for a prestigious WAF Award. In a grand finale to the three day summit, Suisman Urban Design architects from USA were awarded the accolade at a glittering award ceremony, celebrating excellence in design for projects still on the drawing board.

The Middle East and Far East regions promise to deliver exciting projects in years to come, with both Hong Kong and Kuwait boasting two category winning entries. Rapidly developing economies such as India and Poland were also represented, marking a new era of architectural dominance in line with expanding economic growth. The politically sensitive Occupied Palestinian Territory also hosts a category winning project in The Arc, designed by Suisman Urban Design, USA, which won the Future Projects – Masterplanning Award. The judges praised its “fearless example of architecture and masterplanning, helping to promote a political solution.”

Speaking at the WAF Awards 2010 Paul Finch, WAF Programme Director, said: “World Architecture Festival brings international architecture to the forefront, against the backdrop of Barcelona’s breathtaking architecture. Yet again we received a huge response to the fiercely contested WAF Awards, with over 500 entries from 61 different countries. The geographical range and quality of this year’s designs were exceptionally high, with a great deal of entries from “new” economies, both by local architects and international practices. Our congratulations go to the winners for a project that is truly exceptional.”

World Building of the Year
MAXXI, National Museum of XXI Century Arts, Rome, Italy
Zaha Hadid Architects, United Kingdom

ANZ Centre, Melbourne, Australia
HASSELL, Australia
ANZ Centre, designed by HASSELL, is one of the most open and permeable banking headquarters in the world. Rarely – if ever before – has a bank invited the public into the heart of its workplace. This ‘urban campus’ is the next generation in design for collaboration and flexibility with most floor space dedicated to shared, interactive activity to enable the incidental connections that are so critical to today’s knowledge economy. Incorporating a raft of first-time green initiatives, the building is also a global environmental and social sustainability benchmark.

The main form, inspired by the traditional African calabash, results in a stadium form that is immediately recognisable as being African. The Dance and Music Center in The Hague presents a significant opportunity to improve the civic and social quality of both its city as well as the facilities it houses.
The location of the project is right on an important, albeit underutilized urban square – the Spuiplein. This raises concerns of how to improve activity of this urban room as well as knit and transition the public realm within the Center. The facility itself contains its own range of uses from the semi-public components of retail and box office facilities, transitioning to the performance venue foyers and finally to the five venues themselves.
